Clemson Trustee: Tigers have not received any viable conference option
Clemson's Board of Trustees met on Thursday to discuss rumors surrounding the new ACC media rights deal and conference realignment
Chairman David Wilkins, speaking to Tigernet.com after the meeting, said they wanted to "separate the facts from the rumors" regarding conference realignment and the recent ACC media rights deal.
"This board is very committed to Clemson athletics and Clemson sports. We want Clemson teams to be the best they can be," Wilkins told TigerNet.com. "We are very interested in a football program that is excelling at a high level, and we would consider, as we should, any viable option from any conference if we received any. We have not received any.
"In the meantime we are committed to working to make the ACC the strongest conference possible. We took no votes and took no action, we just had a discussion about the lay of the land."
Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips told the same website earlier this week that "80 percent" of the new ACC media rights deal was generated by football. On Thursday Wilkins said the board discussed the new contract "in great detail."
Wilkins' comments continued the to relay the same message: Clemson would consider any options that might benefit the school, but nothing has been formally presented.
"If we were contacted by a conference, we would obviously listen to what they had to say," Wilkins said. "And then we would make a reasonable decision. We aren't seeking that, and we aren't making any overtures about that. I think we have a responsibility to consider any viable component that would come our way. But we haven't been contacted by anybody."
There is still the issue of whether or not the Big 12 is currently looking to expand, though making that decision is one of the top priorities for incoming commissioner Bob Bowlsby - who officially starts his new post on June 15. Until then, it is safe to say we will continue to hear chatter without seeing action on the realignment front.
