Coaching Changes Daily: Alabama AD Battle speaks on Saban
Alabama's AD says the Crimson Tide and Nick Saban are focused on recruiting and the Sugar Bowl. Texas could be focused on Saban.
Alabama athletic director Bill Battle said his football program and football coach Nick Saban are operating under a "business as usual" plan but didn't offer much when asked about a potential contract extension for Saban amid rumors swirling about the Texas job.
"We're focused on recruiting and playing Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl," said Battle as he left an IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York, where he was a guest speaker. Battle did not take questions after that response and left.
Not surprised Battle didn't have much to say publicly. The situation is delicate. Why give any parties involved comments to dissect? Battle did intimate that Saban was out recruiting, which was expected.
The situation is simple: Alabama is trying to lock up Saban to a hefty contract that keeps him the highest-paid coach in the country. Texas wants to back its money truck into Nick's driveway.
If Saban signs a fat extension or rides Bevo into Austin the next 24 hours, neither scenario would shock me.
Alabama approached Saban's camp about the extension before the Auburn game. It's been two weeks. The longer it drags out, the worst it could be for Bama.
Texas will have other, perhaps more attainable options if Saban balks. Stop wasting time with Art Briles. He ain't leaving. Call Jimbo Fisher, see what's up there, though why leave that awesome roster. Wild cards: Mike Gundy, James Franklin.
Oregon OC in coaching mix: Scott Frost was a finalist for the Boise job and interviewed with the Broncos before the school ultimately decided on Arkansas State's Bryan Harsin. Frost is considered a bright young offensive mind, and though Oregon's offense struggled in November, Marcus Mariota's knee problems took a dimension away from Oregon's attack.
Eastern Michigan: Louisville assistant Kenny Carter interviewed, and the buzz is Eastern Illinois coach Dino Babers did the same. Word could come down this week.
