Devin Gardner: 'I'm the quarterback of the team'
Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner isn't afraid of a little competition this spring.
Devin Gardner seems like a man on a mission. After breaking his foot in Michigan's game against Ohio State at the end of the regular season, Gardner wasn't expected to be at full strength when Michigan opened its spring practice, but there he was, practicing without limitation.
He also finds himself in a quarterback competition, which Gardner welcomes, but he's not about to give up his job just yet.
"I'm a competitor, I'm going to compete and they'll pick the best quarterback when it's time," Gardner said after practice on Tuesday. "(But) I'm the quarterback of the team."
Gardner's competiton includes Shane Morris, who started Michigan's bowl loss to Kansas State, as well as Russell Bellomy and Wilson Speight. Morris is probably seen as the biggest threat to Gardner in the competition, but I have a hard time imagining anybody else under center for the Wolverines against Appalachian State in August.
Unless Morris has a transcendant spring, or Gardner gets hurt, I don't see Brady Hoke going with anybody but his most experienced option in what will be a very important season for him and his team.
