Ex-LSU QB Hayden Rettig transferring to Rutgers
Former four-star quarterback recruit Hayden Rettig is transferring from LSU to Rutgers.
Former LSU quarterback Hayden Rettig is trading SEC country for one of the Big Ten's new East Coast outposts.
Rettig announced at the start of June that he was leaving LSU after a single season, and confirmed in a text message to nola.com Thursday night that he will transfer to Rutgers . A redshirt freshman, he will sit out a transfer season in 2014 and have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2015.
"Great place, great people, great education, going after a Big 10 championship," Rettig wrote in his text. His decision was first reported by FoxSports.
A Los Angeles native, Rettig redshirted last fall after signing with the Tigers as a four-star recruit and one of the top-10 pro-style quarterbacks in the class of 2013, per the 247Sports composite rankings. But after starting 2013 as Zach Mettenberger's backup, Rettig was surpassed on the depth chart by fellow freshman Anthony Jennings by season's end. He then slipped to third string in spring camp behind another freshman, Brandon Harris.
Rettig attempted only two passes in LSU's spring game.
Three-year Rutgers starter Gary Nova projects to be under center for the Scarlet Knights again in 2014, with Rettig potentially battling junior Mike Bimonte and redshirt freshman Chris Laviano for the starting job in 2015.
