Ex-USC QB Max Wittek: Visit to Texas 'was awesome'
Former USC quarterback Max Wittek met with Texas' coaching staff on an unofficial visit in Austin over the weekend.
Orangebloods.com caught up with Wittek in the Austin airport on Monday after his visit, telling Rivals' Texas website that his visit "exceeded" his expectations.
"Everything about my trip (to Texas) was awesome," Wittek said. "From the coaches to the players, the school, the campus -- it all probably exceeded what I thought it would be."
Wittek told Orangebloods.com before the trip he needed to feel a strong connection to the coaches, and that happened, he said. Wittek already knows Texas running backs coach Tommie Robinson, who coached RBs at USC last year. But Wittek said he connected with Texas quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson and offensive coordinator Joe Wickline.
"From the time I got to Austin on Saturday, Coach (Shawn) Watson and I were talking ball," Wittek said. "A lot of the concepts they are talking about, I ran at Mater Dei (high school).
"So I already feel comfortable."
Wittek added that he was impressed by new coach Charlie Strong, and his impact on the players. In addition to meeting with the coaches, Wittek attended the Texas-West Virginia basketball game and went bowling with members of the football team.
The 6-foot-4, 235-pound quarterback is on track to graduate from USC this spring, making him eligible to compete for another FBS team this fall. Texas returns both David Ash and Tyrone Swoopes at quarterback, though the former has battled concussions throughout his career and the latter saw very limited action as a freshman in 2013.
CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman also listed Louisville , Pittsburgh and Hawaii as possible destinations for Wittek after talking to the quarterback earlier this month. Wittek would not confirm if Texas was the frontrunner on Monday, but it seems as though the other schools have some catching up to do in recruiting the ex-USC transfer.
