FCS Jackson State wants to build $200 million domed stadium
The SWAC school is thinking big when it comes to a new stadium.

It seems big-time stadiums aren't just for big-time football programs anymore.
Officials at Jackson State announced plans Friday to build a 50,000-seat domed stadium that would cost the school around $200 million when all is said and done. The school's vice president of business and finance, Michael Thomas, told a group of people the new stadium would be financed in a number of ways. Private donors, sponsorship sales, the Mississippi government and money from selling Veterans Memorial Stadium and the surrounding land would all go toward the project.
"Young people today enjoy nice facilities," said Jackson State coach Rick Comegy. "I think (the dome) is going to make a great impact on our program when kids come up and visit and see the modern stadium and the technology that hopefully will be in there."
The idea for building the new stadium was not born simply from wanting a new stadium, as the school is feeling some pressure to leave Veterans Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1950. Several groups in the area have plans to turn the area the stadium currently sits into a "health-care corridor."
The stadium would not be strictly for football use, either, as Jackson State's basketball team would play home games there and concerts and other events would take place in the new stadium as well. The plan would be to have the stadium in use for about 200 days a year.
As for the size, Veterans Memorial Stadium currently has a capacity of over 60,000.
