Fun with Numbers: The career of Clemson's Tajh Boyd
Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd enters a huge game with FSU this week, but win or lose, his career seen through numbers is impressive.
Between print interviews and radio row, Tajh Boyd must have given 200 handshakes and at least 100 hugs.
The scene was the ACC kickoff in Greensboro, NC, in late July, and Boyd treated the hotel lobby like his personal read option.
He owned it.
It was as if Boyd was making sure no one -- league officials, coaches, media -- missed access to him if they needed it.
When asked about his extroverted ways, Boyd said with a smile, "That's just who I am."
With a few months left in his Clemson career, Boyd doesn't have to play salesman. He's proven. Tigers teammates and coaches agree his infectious positivity has played a role in Clemson's 17 wins in its past 19 games.
His place in ACC folklore is almost set, and he came back to school in part for weeks like this: Saturday night in Death Valley, No. 5 Florida State vs. No. 3 Clemson, arguably one of the biggest games in the league's 60-year history.
This is as good a time as any to break down Boyd's career through the prizm of 'Fun with Numbers.'
0.23: Approximate (key word approximate) number of seconds it takes Boyd to release the football from when his throwing motion begins. He has arguably the country's speediest release.
5: Out of six college coaches or NFL scouts I spoke to recently about quarterbacks with the quickest release, five brought up Boyd.
High school and college
757: Number tattooed on Boyd's tricep, a nod to the area code of the Hampton, Va., area where Boyd played ball at Phoebus High School.
70: Number of wins during Boyd's high school and college career combined (43 in high school, 27 at Clemson)
13,341: Number of career high school/college passing yards for Boyd.
166: Number of career total touchdowns between high school and college.
2,358: Number of snaps Boyd has played for Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris, which, over those two-and-a-half seasons, plays out to 73.7 snaps per game (would have been higher without sitting out during blowouts)
9.6: Number of yards per Boyd passing attempt this season.
92.5: Number of Boyd passing attempts this season before he throws an interception on average (two picks on 185 attempts, 30.8 per game)
23: Boyd's national ranking in completion percentage (66.5), which is significant because the biggest knock on Boyd among ACC coaches and NFL scouts is that his accuracy wanes. He'll look great one moment, then miss a receiver by 5 yards the next. Overall, however, 66.5 percent is adequate.
7: Number of Boyd's touchdown passes this season of longer than 40 yards, including five going for at least 60. Of course, it always helps to have a receiver who can do this ...

Chasing Philip Rivers
San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers holds several ACC passing records from his North Carolina State career from 2000-03. Boyd has a chance to break a few of his records this season.
8: Number of touchdown passes Boyd needs to surpass Rivers' ACC record of 95 career touchdown passes. Boyd currently has 88.
6: Number of 300-or-more-yard passing games Boyd needs to surpass Rivers' ACC record of 18. Boyd has 13.
46: Number of Boyd's total touchdowns (rushing and passing) in 2012, an ACC record. The Tigers played 13 games.
46.6: Number of total touchdowns for Boyd projected through 14 games this season (league title game and bowl game) based on his current pace (20 total touchdowns through six games).
4,597: Number of projected total yards for Boyd this season if the Tigers play 14 games, which would leave him three yards shy of Rivers' ACC record of 4,600 yards (4,491 passing, 109 rushing) in 2003.
2,794: Number of total yards Boyd needs to catch Rivers for the ACC record. Boyd has 10,788 (9,836 passing, 952 rushing) to Rivers' 13,582 (13,484 passing, 98 rushing). On Saturday, Boyd is expected to pass Duke's Thaddeus Lewis, who is No. 2 in ACC passing yardage with 10,065. Nobody is touching Rivers' passing totals, at least not right now.
