Georgia State wants to move into Turner Field
Georgia State is hoping to turn Atlanta's Turner Field into a football stadium.
They say one man's trash is another man's treasure, and it turns out the adage applies to stadiums too.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Georgia State is proposing turning Atlanta's Turner Field into a 30,000-seat football stadium. School president Mark Becker told the paper that the school wants to be partners in an estimated $300 million development that will include the stadium, but also retail, residential and student housing.
“Georgia State has never had these sorts of facilities for its athletics programs,” Becker said. “We are aware we’ve won three conference championships this year. The program itself is on an upward trajectory. This continues to support a growing and strengthening athletics program, but one that by no means has achieved its potential.”
It wouldn't be the first time the stadium was remodeled, as it was originally built as Centennial Olympic Stadium for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. It was then turned into a baseball stadium, with the Braves playing their first game in the newly christened Turner Field in 1997. Now, less than 20 years later, the Braves have decided to move to the suburbs because they're starting a family or something.
So it makes some sense that Georgia State, which currently plays in front of a lot of empty seats inside the 74,000-seat Georgia Dome, would want to move into a smaller venue. Particularly one that that's still relatively new.
As to whether or not it will happen, it's too early to tell. Georgia State's proposal is one of four that have already been made to Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed about what to do with the 77 acres of land Turner Field currently inhabits.
