Robb Akey has become the first FBS coach to lose his job during the 2012 season. Idaho announced on Sunday that Akey has been relieved of his duties.
“The president [Duane Nellis] and I believe it is important to make this move now so we can immediately begin the process of hiring a new coach for the 2013 season,” athletic director Rob Spear said in a statement. “We appreciate coach Akey’s enthusiasm and dedication to the University of Idaho, but this is the right move at this time.”
Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser has been named as the interim coach.
Akey just finished coaching his 70th game with Idaho on Saturday, a 70-28 loss at Louisiana Tech that brought Akey's career record at Idaho to 20-50.
Akey's best season at the school was in 2009, when the Vandals went 8-5 and beat Bowling Green in the Humanitarian Bowl. That was the only season in which Idaho finished with a winning record under Akey.
Since the beginning of the 2011 season, the Vandals are 3-17.
