Illinois and Virginia announce home-and-home series
Illinois and Virginia have scheduled games for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Remember not too long ago during the time of Conference Realignmentageddon when there were rumors that Virginia would be leaving the ACC to join the Big Ten? Obviously it didn't happen, but maybe there was a chance Virginia and Illinois really enjoyed the idea of playing each other in some kind of Orange and Blue Rivalry, as the two schools announced a home-and-home series on Wednesday.
"This series with Virginia is a great addition to our future schedules," said Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas in a statement. "We set out to schedule games against peer institutions and we were able to do that with this series."
The first game will be played in Charlottesville on Sept. 11, 2021, with the return game being played in Champaign on Sept. 10, 2022.
The two schools have met twice previously, both times in bowl games (1990 Citrus Bowl, 1999 Micronpc.com Bowl), with the Illini winning both meetings.
