In 80-20 win, UNC nearly outscored basketball team on Saturday
North Carolina and Old Dominion agreed to a 10-minute fourth quarter when the Tar Heels took a 80-20 lead in the quarter.
The Tar Heels held a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but a 35-0 second quarter and 31-7 third quarter run that was capped with a Ryan Switzer punt return touchdown -- his fourth in three games, tying the ACC single-season record.
|Teams that scored 80 (Since 2000)|
|Oklahoma State 84, Savannah State 0||2012|
|Wisconsin 83, Indiana 20||2010|
|North Carolina 80, Old Dominion 20||2013|
|Florida State 80, Idaho 14||2013|
|West Virginia 80, Rutgers 7||2001|
The 80 point performance fell just short of Clemson's 82 in 1981 against Wake Forest, and just short of matching the point total of North Carolina's basketball team on Saturday.
While Larry Fedora's team was battling an opponent from Virginia on the field in Chapel Hill, Roy Williams' Tar Heels were tipping off against Richmond in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament in Connecticut. The basketball team pulled out a 82-72 victory, just narrowly topping the football team's output.
After Switzer's punt return touchdown gave the Tar Heels a 80-20 lead, both Larry Fedora and ODU coach Bobby Wilder agreed to play a shortened, 10-minute fourth quarter. The Tar Heels' backups had a chance to score with a field goal late in the fourth, but opted to run the clock out.
After starting the season 1-5, North Carolina clinched bowl eligibility with the win against Old Dominion. The turnaround has also positioned the Tar Heels to earn a share of the ACC's Coastal Division with a victory against Duke next week, but the tiebreakers will keep the team from earning a bid to the ACC Championship Game.
