Jay Paterno sues Penn State over 'improper termination'
Jay Paterno and fellow former Penn State assistant Bill Kenney have filed suit against Penn State, asking for more than $1,000,000 in damages.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday that Jay Paterno and fellow former Penn State assistant Bill Kenney have sued the university for more than a million dollars in damages.
Kenney and Paterno, the son of Penn State legend Joe Paterno, have filed the suit over "improper termination" and accuse the school of "engaging in civil conspiracy against them," per the Post-Gazette.
The suit alleges that the university's consent to NCAA sanctions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal represented "concerted actions" with NCAA president Mark Emmert, investigator Louis Freeh and others, actions that associated Paterno and Kenney with Sandusky and damaged their reputations "without due process of law."
Neither Paterno, the Nittany Lions' quarterbacks coach, nor Kenney, the offensive line coach, were retained when Bill O'Brien was named head coach in January 2012. Kenney is currently the offensive line coach at Western Michigan, with Paterno having made an abbreviated run for the Pennsylvania lieutenant governor's office earlier this year.
Paterno claims in the suit to have applied for the head coaching jobs at Colorado, Boston College, Connecticut and James Madison without having been interviewed for any. Kenny claims to have been turned down for multiple assistants' jobs that have gone to less-qualified coaches, with interviewers asking about his connection to the Sandusky scandal.
