Michigan punter reinstated to team, will sit out 2013 season
Michigan punter Will Hagerup has been reinstated to the team, but Brady Hoke has announced Hagerup will sit out the 2013 season.
Michigan announced on Tuesday that punter Will Hagerup has been reinstated to the team but that he'll sit out the 2013 season. Hagerup had been suspended for a violation of team rules in December and did not play in the Outback Bowl against South Carolina.
"Getting back around his teammates is an important step in this process," said Michigan coach Brady Hoke in a release. "Will and I have had several discussions over the past five months, none of which have been about football. Our primary concern has been for him as a person, and that will not change. Will is a part of our family, and we will continue to offer the resources to help him learn and grow. I am pleased with his progress to this point, and he knows that must continue every day moving forward."
Even though he will sit out the 2013 season Hagerup will be allowed to participate in all team functions and will have one year of eligibility remaining for the 2014 season.
"The past five months have been an incredible, humbling time for me," said Hagerup in the same release. "I understand my actions represent every person that supports me, as well as any man who has worn a Michigan jersey the past 133 years. My dad always says that character is how you act when no one is watching. In retrospect, I needed to take a big step in the character department, and I’m excited in the progress I’ve made in the last five months."
Hagerup's December suspension was the third of his career at Michigan. He had been suspended for Michigan's game against Ohio State in 2010 and also missed the first four games of the 2011 season.
Hagerup averaged 45.09 yards per punt for the Wolverines last season.
