Muschamp: Murphy still hurt, freshman QB Mornhinweg ready
Will Muschamp said Thursday that starting quarterback Tyler Murphy has not practiced this week and Skyler Mornhinweg is ready to play if needed.
Florida quarterback Tyler Murphy (shoulder) has not practiced yet this week, and Will Muschamp is prepared to start redshirt freshman quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg against South Carolina if Murphy cannot play.
Muschamp addressed his quarterback situation on Thursday night during his weekly radio show. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the coaches are waiting until after Friday's practice to make a decision.
While Muschamp did not rule out Murphy to play Saturday night, calling it a "game-time decision," the third-year coach said Mornhinweg was on track to line up under center for the first time as a Gator.
"We feel good about him moving forward and being ready to go," Muschamp said of Mornhinweg. "That's the way it's looking now."
On Tuesday, Gators offensive coordinator Brent Pease told reporters that Murphy was "day-to-day based on what the training room has to say." Murphy has dealt with a shoulder issue throughout the season, but a re-injury during last week's loss to Vanderbilt could leave Florida with its third quarterback of the season for the SEC finale against the Gamecocks.
Mornhinweg, son of longtime NFL coach Marty Mornhinweg, has yet to record an appearance for the Gators, though he has been preparing as the second-string quarterback since Murphy assumed the starting job.
Murphy's shoulder issue is just the latest in a long string of injury-related bad news for the Gators, who have lost 10 players to season-ending injuries (seven starters) after Monday's announcement regarding the end of Antonio Morrison's season. In total, more than two dozen Florida players have missed time in 2013 due to injuries.
Florida needs two wins in its final three games to avoid the program's first losing season since 1979. After traveling to Columbia, the Gators will finish the year at home against Georgia Southern and Florida State.
