Nebraska adds Cincinnati to future schedule, alters NIU series
Cincinnati and Nebraska will play in Lincoln on Sept. 12, 2020, and then meet in Cincinnati on Sept. 13, 2025.
The two teams have met just one time on the football field, when Nebraska defeated Cincinnati 41-0 in 1906. The Bearcats will visit Memorial Stadium on Sept. 12, 2020, then the Cornhuskers will make the return trip on Sept. 13, 2025. In both cases, it will be the first nonconference game of Nebraska's schedule for that particular season.
The scheduling agreement also includes a home-and-home series in men's basketball. Cincinnati will host the first meeting in the 2013-14 season, while Nebraska will host the return trip the following season.
That's a long way away, but this kind of advanced planning has become necessary to ensure a competitive nonconference football schedule. This game is particularly important for Nebraska, which will be moving to a nine-game Big Ten schedule in 2016.
Nebraska also announced a change in scheduling agreement with Northern Illinois. The initial agreement covered three games: two in Lincoln and a neutral site contest at Soldier Field. Because of the move to a nine-game schedule, the Cornhuskers had to cancel the Soldier Field game scheduled for 2016.
Nebraska's 2016 nonconference schedule is now complete and includes games against Fresno State, Tennessee and Wyoming before beginning the Big Ten slate.
Northern Illinois already had been scheduled to play in Lincoln in 2017 and 2019, and now with the revisions Northern Illinois has four trips scheduled to Lincoln: Sept. 16, 2017, Sept. 14, 2019, Sept. 4, 2021 and Sept. 16, 2023.
