Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah (knee) could miss the rest of spring
Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah 'tweaked' his knee and could miss a couple weeks, Bo Pelini said Monday.
Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah suffered a knee injury that could result in missing the rest of spring practice, Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini said Monday.
Pelini told reporters that the rising junior running back "tweaked" his knee during Saturday's practice. Knee injuries to running backs are a sensitive issue for Nebraska fans after Rex Burkhead's health issues in 2012, but Pelini said Abdullah's injury is "kind of like Rex's, but to a lesser degree."
"He tweaked his knee a little bit, nothing big," Pelini told the Lincoln Star Journal. "He'll be back in a couple weeks full-go.
"He'll be back in time for part of spring. Whether we let him do that, I don't know. It gave us a little bit of a scare, but not a big deal."
Abdullah led the team with 1,137 rushing yards last season, starting in seven games and appearing in all 14 contests due to Burkhead's injury issues. Judging by Pelini's comments, it seems the staff is not concerned about the possibility of Abdullah sitting out the rest of spring drills.
"Let's face it, Ameer didn't need a lot of carries this spring," Pelini said. "If he's going to get tweaked and miss a couple days, now's the time."
Rising sophomore Imani Cross totaled 324 yards and seven rushing touchdowns in 2012, but Nebraska's depth took a hit with Braylon Heard's departure from the team. With Abdullah's injury, another running back to watch this spring is redshirt freshman King Frazier.
