North Carolina and Illinois announce home-and-home series
The Tar Heels and Illini have scheduled a home-and-home series that will take place during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
North Carolina and Illinois have agreed to a home-and-home series to take place during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. The first game will take place at North Carolina's Kenan Stadium on Sept. 19, 2015, with the second game being played at Memorial Stadium in Champaign on Sept. 10, 2016.
"Coach Fedora and I have been in discussions for several months about our future non-conference football opponents. We both felt Illinois would be an attractive matchup for both schools and would be a tremendous experience and opportunity for our student-athletes, staff and fans," said North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham in a release. "This series is an opportunity to bring a quality Big Ten program to Chapel Hill, while also providing a unique travel experience for our student-athletes."
North Carolina and Illinois have only met on the football field twice, with the most recent meeting coming in 1987. The first meeting took place in 1971, and the Tar Heels won both matchups.
Of course, while there hasn't been much history between these two schools on the football field, it wasn't that long ago that both met in the NCAA Final Four as North Carolina beat the Illini 75-70 in the 2005 championship game.
So maybe these two can get a basketball-football rivalry type thing going on.
