Pelini: Taylor Martinez (foot) might not return this season
Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said Monday that Taylor Martinez's foot issue could prevent him from returning to action this season.
Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez has been limited by a foot issue for most of the season, appearing in just one game since first suffering the injury against UCLA on Sept. 14. According to Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini, the injury could prevent the senior quarterback from making a return to the field this season.
Pelini on possibility of a Taylor Martinez return this year: "I don't know if the chances are real good." Foot injury is main culprit.— Mitch Sherman (@mitchsherman) November 11, 2013
Martinez missed three games before returning to the lineup at Minnesota on Oct. 26.. Nebraska's offensive struggles in that 34-23 loss -- the only conference loss of the season thus far -- were not the fault of Martinez alone, but he did complete just 16 of 30 passes for 139 yards while recording eight rushing attempts for 16 yards. With Martinez sidelined, the quarterback duties have been handled by primarily by freshman Tommy Armstrong, with Ron Kellogg III filling in and delivering one of the most memorable moments of the season for Huskers fans.
Nebraska's offense has been up-and-down through the season, partly a result of instability at the quarterback position. But the Cornhuskers are still in the hunt for a Big Ten title and can greatly improve their chances with a win on Saturday against Michigan State.
The Spartans are coming off a bye and have one of the nation's best defensive units, but the oddsmakers are still respecting Nebraska's chances to pull an upset in Lincoln, favoring No. 14 Michigan State by less than a touchdown. A win puts the Cornhuskers just two wins from clinching the Legends Division for the second straight year, likely setting up a meeting with Ohio State in the Big Ten title game.
