Petition started to remove GEO Group name from FAU's stadium
Not surprisingly there's a group of fans against the idea of a correctional facilities management corporation sponsoring a football stadium.
A report Tuesday said FAU's football stadium would soon be sponsored by GEO Group, a multinational corporation that runs private correctional facilities -- more commonly referred to as prisons.
Now, while I kind of like the idea because it has led to Florida Atlantic's stadium being nicknamed "Owlcatraz," not surprisingly, there are plenty of other people who aren't as enthusiastic about the idea.
According to the Sun Sentinel a group has begun a petition to have the name removed.
A petition, started Tuesday, calling for the removal of the GEO Group name from FAU Stadium, has received middling support to this point, but the Dream Activist staff have seemed keen on using the "Owlcatraz" nickname proposed by FAU play-by-play announcer Ken LaVicka.
GEO Group has been heavily scruitinized by civil libertarians for its treatment of inmates, some which are alleged to be held illegally.
The school itself has said it has no problem aligning itself with the GEO Group.
Whether or not this petition will have any impact on the stadium's sponsorship deal remains to be seen, but I can't help but feel like the best method for getting the school to ditch its new sponsor would be to find another sponsor willing to pay the school more money than the GEO Group is.
Signatures are nice, but money will speak louder.
