Picks: Florida State and Miami play their biggest game in years
It's a quiet week in college football, but we do get the biggest Florida State-Miami game in a long time
This week is the quiet before the storm in college football. You could argue next Thursday's small slate of games is bigger than anything we'll see this week. But we do have Florida State Seminoles - Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes in the evening. You can spend the day couch tailgating before then. That's what most of the top ranked teams are doing. Alabama Crimson Tide , Oregon Ducks , Stanford Cardinal , Baylor Bears , Oklahoma Sooners and LSU Tigers are all off this weekend and Ohio State Buckeyes might as well be. However, if you want something to watch before the big showdown, there are some options.
Last week, I was 5-1 straight up and 3-3 vs. the spread. That makes the season total 40-14 overall and 27-25-2 against the spread.
Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes at Florida State Seminoles (-22): A 22-point line between undefeated, top 10 teams? Wow. That's a line that probably says more about Miami than the Seminoles. This is the biggest game between these two since the 2000 season, when Miami won, but still finished behind Florida State in the BCS. The Hurricanes have struggled the last couple weeks. This could be a preview of the ACC title game. Jameis Winston gets all the ink, but the FSU defense is among the nation's best. Still, Florida State wins, but Miami covers.
Michigan Wolverines at Michigan State Spartans (-5): Another bitter rivalry game between ranked teams, but in this case, barely ranked. Michigan's offense moves the ball pretty well, and can put up big numbers as long as Devin Gardner isn't giving it away. The Spartan defense is among the best in the nation though. The offense is pretty dysfunctional though. They only scored 14 against Purdue Boilermakers two weeks ago, but 42 against Illinois Fighting Illini last week. Michigan is more consistent, and the pick this week.
Oklahoma State Cowboys at Texas Tech Red Raiders (-2): Texas Tech Red Raiders got off to a hot start, but being sloppy with the ball finally caught up to them at Oklahoma last week. The Cowboys stubbed their toe early at West Virginia, a loss that looks worse every week. They also are struggling at QB, flipping back and forth between current starter Clint Chelf and backup J.W. Walsh . However, they are among the best in the nation at taking the ball away. Uh, oh. Oklahoma State wins and covers.
Georgia Bulldogs vs Florida Gators (+3): The World's Largest Cocktail Party probably looks more like the World's Largest ER. Both teams have been fighting significant injuries all season long and their records show it. Still, both are just one game back of division leader Missouri Tigers . It looks like Georgia will finally get stud RB Todd Gurley back. That's a big boost for the Bulldogs. Georgia wins and covers.
(-10.5): Tennessee has been feisty at home, taking Georgia to OT and beating
South Carolina Gamecocks
. On the road, the Vols haven't been quite as tough. In fariness though, their three road opponents have been Alabama, Oregon and Florida. Now comes another highly ranked team, but one that just got gut-punched last week. Mizzou may not be entirely themselves this week, but they will still win and cover.
