Police: dismissed Vanderbilt DB stabbed ex-Commodore OL in bar

"He broke a team rule," Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin said last week when announcing the departure of redshirt sophomore Jacquese Kirk. "He broke a team rule, and I’m going to leave it at that."

According to a police report reviewed by the Nashville Tennessean on Monday, however, that rules violation wasn't a small one. Per the report, Kirk admitted to police that he stabbed former Commodore offensive lineman Justin Cabbagestalk with a pocket knife during an April 7 altercation at a Nashville bar.

Kirk was neither arrested nor charged after the incident after Cabbagestalk told officers that he "wanted to let the matter die" and would not aid in any prosecution of Kirk for what would have been aggravated assault charges. The case is closed.

Franklin declined any further comment to the Tennessean, saying his previous statement was "all I'm going to say."

According to the police report, Cabbagestalk told officers that he and Kirk had bumped into each other at The Tin Roof and argued before walking away in sepearate directions. He noticed "about 10 minutes later" that he had a hole in his shirt and was bleeding.

Kirk later told police that Cabbagestalk had "hit or pushed" him in the head, after which Kirk drew his pocket knife and stabbed Cabbagestalk before closing the knife and beginning to punch Cabbagestalk.

Though both are now-former Commodore players, Cabbagestalk and Kirk were not teammates. Cabbagestalk's career ended in 2010 after a serious knee injury. His bio, which lists him as a senior, is still available on the official Vanderbilt website.

A three-star recruit from Jasper, Ala., Kirk redshirted during the 2011 season and played sparingly at wide receiver in 2012. He had moved to cornerback during Vandy's 2013 spring camp in the search for more playing time. Per the Tennessean, his Twitter bio currently describes him as a corner for FCS Jacksonville (Ala.) State.
