Prospective selection committee members contacted for CFB playoff
CFP executive director Bill Hancock says he has started reaching out to possible members. No dry run for the committee in 2013.
Prospective College Football Playoff selection committee members have begun to be contacted, CFP/BCS executive director Bill Hancock said Wednesday morning.
"We're making progress on the selection committee," Hancock said during a media conference call. "We're not finished. I'm in the process of making calls to prospective committee members. We’ve got a lot more talking to do, so there’s no deadline."
Hancock says some names could emerge by the time the BCS commissioners meet again Sept. 25 in Chicago, but added that is only speculative.
One source said the original list of 100 names submitted by the conference had been whittled to approximately 35. The committee will end up in the range of 12 to 18 members.
"The working concept is that the committee will have megabytes of data in front of them about every team," Hancock said. "I don't think there will be one central metric such as the RPI."
The commissioners decided not to have a dry run of the selection committee during the 2013 season.
"We wanted to make sure the BCS was foremost and nothing distracted from the BCS," Hancock said. "All those games that are kicking off tomorrow night, those student-athletes don't care about the playoff. We didn't want to create some sort of shadow cabinet.
"The process is going to require a signficant time commitment on the part of the committee members. We just didn't want to put them in the position to rehearse to put on The Sound of Music."
Requests for proposals (RFPs) have been sent to 14-15 cities to play host to the 2016 and 2017 CFP championship games, Hancock added. The deadline for responding is Sept. 27.
