Report: NCAA investigating high school transfer of Alabama commit Darius Paige
The Pensacola News Journal is reporting that NCAA associate director of enforcement is interviewing school officials regarding DT Darius Paige.
The NCAA is investigating the high school transfer of Alabama commit Darius Paige, according to a report in the Pensacola News Journal.
Paige is a defensive tackle at Foley (Ala.) High School and has been the subject of local scrutiny since reports surfaced last spring that the highly-touted recruit was academically ineligible while enrolled at Washington High in Pensacola, Fla. Paige transferred to Foley, located less than 30 miles west of Pensacola, and was deemed eligible to play for the Lions this fall.
Needless to say, Washington officials weren't happy to lose the star defensive lineman. Particularly Washington defensive coordinator George Schellang, who alleged that Alabama assistant coach Jeremy Pruitt forced the move.
Schellang and Troy Faucheaux, Washington High's athletic director, were issued letters of reprimand from the Escambia County (Fla.) School District for their alleged role in spreading information regarding Paige's recruitment, including academic details that might have violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
The investigation was launched by the school district after Faucheaux was posting on an SEC website with the alias "tigerbait65."
On Tuesday, the News Journal reported that NCAA associate director of enforcement Renee Gomila will be in Pensacola this week to interview Washington officials regarding Paige. If Washington officials want to make allegations that the player's transfer was driven by Alabama for academic reasons, that will be the person they should talk to. At least it promises to be more effective than posting on SEC websites with LSU-inspired handles.
