Report: Police accuse former Ga. Tech LB of imprisoning child in basement
Warrants have been issued for the arrest of former All-ACC linebacker Recardo Wimbush and his wife after police say they imprisoned a child in a basement room for more than a year.
Former Georgia Tech linebacker Recardo Wimbush and his wife Therian are expected to turn themselves into Gwinnett, Ga. police on pending arrest warrants, after police said the pair locked up their 13-year-old son in a basement room for over a year.
Atlanta's WSB TV reports that the couple is expected to be charged with cruelty to children and false imprisonment. Both charges are felonies. The couple is required to turn themselves in Friday, but as of early Friday afternoon had not, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
After acting on an anonymous tip to state welfare workers, police investigators told WSB the child had been confined to a locked room the size of an office cubicle, with only a boxspring and mattress and a bucket for use as a toilet. The boy's nine siblings were allowed to move about the family's suburban Gwinnett County, Ga., home normally.
Per the WSB report, in the warrant a detective states that "Therian and Recardo Sr. justified his treatment in Juvenile Court by saying the boy molested three of the younger siblings. The child stated he was locked in the bedroom located in the basement for taking the family DVD player and lying about it."
Police claimed they found no evidence to support the molestation claim or corroboration from the other children in the home.
The 13-year-old showed no physical distress, police reported. All 10 children are now reportedly in state custody.
Wimbush played for the Yellow Jackets from 1999 through 2002, starting 50 straight games, leading the team in tackles three times, and earning second-team All-ACC honors as a senior. Wimbush signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003 but was cut before the season began.
