Saban on Texas rumors: 'I'm too damn old' to start at another job
Texas regent Wallace Hall contacted Nick Saban's agent about the possibility of replacing Mack Brown in January.
Nick Saban replacing Mack Brown at Texas? Well, there are at least two regents at Texas who have considered the idea.
According to the Associated Press, a current and former Texas regent contacted Nick Saban's agent, Jimmy Sexton, in January to ask about the possibility of Saban replacing Brown.
A couple days later the former regent, Tom Hicks, talked to Mack Brown about retiring, which Brown obviously said he did not want to do. The current regent, Wallace Hall, told the AP that he spoke with Sexton by phone a few days after Alabama beat Notre Dame in the BCS championship game.
The AP reports that it's unclear who initiated the meeting, and Saban's agent "did not return a call seeking comment."
Saban, however, did have an answer on Thursday during his radio show when Cecil Hurt, of the Tuscaloosa News, asked the Tide's head coach about any possible contact with Texas.
"Nothing went on that I know of. I don't know about any of this stuff," Saban said. "I haven't talked to anybody about that particular situation. They have a coach there."
According to Michael Casagrande, Saban continued his response with enthusiasm that very much pleased the crowd in attendance at Buffalo Wild Wings.
"Every year it's something. Last year it was the Cleveland Browns," Saban said. "The year before it was somebody else, the NFL. Terry and I are very happy here in Tuscaloosa. We really love the University of Alabama. We feel like a part of a community here and we have lots of good friends here.
"And quite frankly," Saban continued. "I'm just too damn old to start over somewhere else."
And to think, this all took place before Texas got off to a 1-2 start to the season with losses to BYU and Ole Miss. You can only imagine what's going to happen should the Longhorns continue to struggle.
I'm guessing it will involve a lot of "Saban to Texas" rumors whether they're valid or not.
