Update II: South Florida coach Charlie Strong announced after Tuesday’s practice that defensive back Hassan Childs was no longer with the team following the player’s involvement with a road rage incident over the weekend. 

Strong told reporters he spoke with his team on Sunday following the incident to remind them playing for USF was a privilege. 

Childs was shot three times in the incident but was in stable condition. According to police, it was Childs who first drew his gun. 

Update I: There has been a significant update in the shooting of South Florida defensive back Hassan Childs. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Childs allegedly pulled a gun in a road rage incident that resulted in him being shot three times in the upper arm and torso.

Tampa Police spokesman Lt. Steve Lee told the Times that the other man involved in the incident, Jovanni Jimenez, called Lee to report that Childs had drawn a gun on him. Jimenez said Childs pointed a gun at him and his family, at which point Jimenez fired three shots in self defense. It is not clear what started the argument

There has been no report of a change in Childs’ stable condition.

Childs was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor marijuana possession.

South Florida defensive back Hassan Childs was injured in an off-campus shooting incident overnight, according to the school. Childs was reported to be in stable condition and USF says no one else was injured in the incident.

In a statement released Sunday, coach Charlie Strong said that he was “deeply concerned” to learn that one of his players was involved in the shooting.

“We are deeply concerned that an incident occurred overnight in which one of our players, Hassan Childs, was injured in a shooting,” Strong said. “Thankfully, Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured.

“There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time.”

Childs appeared in eight games in 2016, recording 16 tackles while also participating on special teams as a punt returner.
