TCU QB Casey Pachall says he 'matured a lot' in time away
TCU quarterback Casey Pachall spoke to the media for the first time since a drunk driving arrest in October.
"I didn't know," Patterson said of Pachall's possible return. "I put it in his hands. The biggest thing was to give him hope and understanding."
Casey Pachall spoke to the media for the first time since his October drunk driving arrest. He spent three months at a substance abuse treatment facility and returned to school in January. According to the senior quarterback, the entire experience has changed him for the better.
"I've matured a lot," Pachall said. "Everything that's happened, happened for a reason. Everything I did was part of the plan and needed to be done."
Pachall will continue to battle with sophomore quarterback Trevone Boykin for the starting job when fall camp opens Thursday afternoon. The Horned Frogs were 4-0 before Pachall was suspended and Boykin was forced into the starter's role for the remainder of the season. TCU finished the year 7-6, falling to Michigan State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.
Gary Patterson has been hesitant to give the starting job right back to Pachall, who is scheduled to graduate in December, but few close to the program believe that Boykin will beat him out for the job. Boykin's play was inconsistent -- but not unexpected for a freshman -- a year ago. Pachall's experience gives him an edge in the competition, and Gary Patterson said as much on Wednesday.
"It's not going to be one of those where we split 50/50, one is going to be the starting quarterback," Patterson said on Wednesday. "If it's a tie the older guy is going to win [the starting role]."
In 2011, Pachall completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 2,921 yards and 25 touchdowns, throwing just seven interceptions and averaging 8.5 yards per attempt -- second only to then-Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore in the Mountain West. At the time of his arrest and suspension in 2012, Pachall was averaging 9.8 yards per attempt with 10 touchdowns and just one interception.
