Bad news for the #StickToSports crowd: it’s officially impossible to keep politics and sports separated. (Not that it was easy before.)
FBI Director James Comey told the House Intelligence Committee on Monday that his agency will move forward with an investigation into whether Russia interfered with the 2016 Presidential election. Specifically, the FBI is looking at whether President Donald Trump colluded with members of the Russian government to defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
It goes without saying this is an extremely serious and sensitive matter, which is why everyone’s eyebrows should have been collectively raised when the football teams Texas and Texas Tech came up during the hearing.

“Putin hated Secretary Clinton so much that the flip side of that coin was he had a clear preference for the person running against the person he hated so much,” Comey said.
“That might work on Saturday afternoon when my wife’s Red Raiders are playing the Texas Longhorns. She really likes the Red Raiders,” Conaway replied. “But all the rest of the time... the logic is that because he really didn’t like presidential candidate Clinton that he automatically liked Trump. That assessment’s based on what?”
“Whoever the Red Raiders are playing, you want the Red Raiders to win,” Comey said. “By definition, you want their opponent to lose.”
If all of that seemed confusing, you’re not alone. Hell, the two people at the center of the exchange didn’t seem to quite understand the analogy. It appears Conaway was trying to liken Texas Tech to Russia, Texas to Clinton and anyone playing the Longhorns to Trump.
Or maybe Conaway’s wife was supposed to be Russia, which isn’t a flattering analogy either. Who knows.
Either way, the sports analogies weren’t done. Comey also brought up the New England Patriots and how much he hated them, proving the only clarity gained from all of this is that he has something in common with most Americans.
