Twitter reaction: Michael Sam comes out
Yes, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year coming out before the draft prompted some reaction on Twitter.
No, the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year isn't about to go undrafted, which means former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam's Sunday night announcement will make him the NFL's first publicly gay player.
It's a big deal, and not surprisingly, it prompted plenty of reaction of Twitter. A sampling, starting with teammate Donovan Bonner:
We knew of his status for 5 years and not one team member, coach, or staff member said anything says a lot about our family atmosphere— Donovan Bonner (@ElTorroOcho) February 10, 2014
Teammate Kentrell Brothers:
Our coaches and players knew all along about this and noone said anything. Just show the amount of respect we have for our family.— Kentrell Brothers (@Kentrell_Mizzou) February 10, 2014
Teammate Mitch Morse:
Proud of Michael Sam for his courage. Unbelievable teammate and football player!— Mitch Morse (@GimmeSumMorse65) February 10, 2014
From media and elsewhere:
Sam: I am.— Mike Vaccaro (@MikeVacc) February 10, 2014
Guess Michael Sam coming out to his teammates before the season didn't hurt the locker room. #Mizzou went from 5-7 to 12-2.— Bruce Feldman (@BFeldmanCBS) February 10, 2014
If gay-friendliness becomes an SEC recruiting factor Tuscaloosa's about to get the biggest damn gay bar you've ever seen.— Spencer Hall (@edsbs) February 10, 2014
Meet Michael Sam, my new hero. Bravo for courage. My kid will be wearing his NFL jersey, team be damned http://t.co/608jXDQxTX— jeffpearlman (@jeffpearlman) February 10, 2014
Michael Sam just Kool-Aid Man'd his way through the last wall of ignorance in sports. My new hero.— Ken Tremendous (@KenTremendous) February 10, 2014
I asked a lot of players last summer about playing with a gay player. A handful said it would bother them. Most did not.— Pete Prisco (@PriscoCBS) February 10, 2014
Michael Sam won’t be the first gay player in the NFL — just the first one to be open about it.— Dieter Kurtenbach (@dkurtenbach) February 10, 2014
From Missouri beat writer Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Most of us who covered Missouri knew this day was coming. Sam didn't do interviews this season until a few public group sessions in December— Dave Matter (@Dave_Matter) February 10, 2014
Wonder why Mizzou had a breakout year, look at the bond of their team...No one said a peep. Very impressive— John Middlekauff (@JohnMiddlekauff) February 10, 2014
From Jonathan Martin, subject of the 2013 Dolphins bullying scandal:
Hats off to you Michael Sam, that takes some guts #respect— Jonathan A. Martin (@J_Martin71) February 10, 2014
