USC CB Josh Shaw (ankles) out after getting injured rescuing nephew
Josh Shaw suffered two sprained ankles after jumping off a second-floor balcony to save his nephew from drowning in the pool below.
UPDATE (Aug. 26): USC is investigating the incident which led to Shaw's injury. The senior cornerback (and recently voted team captain) will not be available to the media for the time being.
"Josh Shaw, first and foremost, is a good person and a good kid. He came to us with what had occurred Saturday night. I have no reason and no history to not believe Josh and his story of what has occurred," Steve Sarkisian said Tuesday. "Obviously within the last few hours or so we've gotten a few phone calls contradicting what Josh said occurred on Saturday night, so we're going to continue to vet it. We're looking at it, but beyond that I only know what I know."

USC cornerback Josh Shaw will be out indefinitely after suffering an injury while saving his nephew from drowning on Saturday night.
"I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew," Shaw said on Monday. "My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."
According to a school release, Shaw was at a family social function when he saw his 7-year-old nephew, who cannot swim, in distress in a pool. Shaw lept from a second-floor balcony and injured himself landing on the concrete below. He then crawled into the pool and got his nephew out safely.
"That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside," Steve Sarkisian said. "But that's the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he'll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he'll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible."
USC kicks off the 2014 season against Fresno State. It is the second-straight meeting against the Bulldogs, who USC defeated 45-20 in the Las Vegas Bowl with Clay Helton filling in as the interim coach.
