USC WR Marqise Lee (knee) 'getting better daily,' Redd cleared to play
Southern Cal wide receiver Marqise Lee sustained a knee sprain in the Trojans' loss to Arizona State. He hopes to return against Arizona on Oct. 10.
With no opponent on the schedule until next Thursday, USC's first week of practice under interim head coach Ed Orgeron has allowed the team some time to get adjusted to some changes in the routine.
Orgeron has already strayed from Lane Kiffin's style of discussing injuries with the media, addressing the status of All-American wide receiver Marqise Lee on Tuesday. Lee suffered a sprained knee in the Trojans' loss to Arizona State, but told the Los Angeles Times that he was "getting better daily" and hopes to play against Arizona on Oct. 10.
Orgeron is hopeful -- as any head coach would be with a talent like Lee -- but realistic in his expectations for next week.
"Marqise Lee has made some miraculous recoveries," Oregeron said. "We're going to work hard to get him ready for next week. We don't know if he will be or not."
While Lee's status is in doubt, the next week's Pac-12 South matchup should be the season debut for running back Silas Redd. Redd, the Trojans leading rusher a year ago with 905 yards on the season, suffered a knee injury in spring practice and has undergone two surgical procedures. He has been cleared to play, but told reporters he will have to "ease into things."
With Redd sidelined, the Trojans have gotten increased production from sophomore Tre Madden and freshman Justin Davis. Madden is averaging over 100 yards per game and Davis has taken advantage of his limited action, averaging 7.40 yards per carry and racking up three touchdowns in the loss to Arizona State.
