Utah State clinches spot in the Mountain West title game
Utah State won the Mountain Division outright and earned a spot in the Mountain West Championship Game against Fresno State.
Utah State won its fifth straight game on Saturday, clinching a spot against Fresno State in the inaugural Mountain West Championship Game.
The Aggies clinched the Mountain division outright with a 35-7 win against Wyoming. Joey DeMartino was effective on the ground (20 carries, 121 yards, one touchdown) and freshman quarterback Darrell Garretson completed 20 of his 29 passes and threw three touchdowns in the win, improving to 5-0 as a starter since Chuckie Keeton's season-ending injury.
Keeton's injury in the loss to Boise State hurt Utah State's chances of winning the division, but the Broncos' loss at San Diego State opened the door and the Aggies have capitalized with a strong finish to the regular season.
The Mountain West Championship Game will be played Saturday, Dec. 7 and broadcast on CBS just after the SEC Championship game. The game will be played at the home of the team with the higher BCS ranking when the standings are released on Sunday.
It's notot a bad double-header for Championship Saturday, as the MW title game features the leagu's most potent offense (Fresno State) against a suffocating Utah State defense that entered the week allowing just 4.58 yards per play (No. 6 in FBS).
