Warren Sapp sounds off on Al Golden to Penn State, Miami D woes
Warren Sapp explained why he was upset with Al Golden and the current state of the Miami defense.
Warren Sapp has created some headlines at the Super Bowl for his thoughts on the current Hall of Fame class, and now he has followed that with some critical comments about Miami coach Al Golden and the Hurricanes football program.
Sapp joined Kup and Crowder on WQAM 560 in Miami on Wednesday, and after weighing in on the Hall of Fame, Richard Sherman and other NFL topics, the legendary Hurricane was asked about the current state of the Miami defense.
"Don't talk to me about Al Golden and whatever that D-coordinator's name is," Sapp said. "Let me tell you what I've learned in the 19 years of being around the NFL ... don't hire someone you can't fire. That's the golden rule. The D-coordinator is killing my school. That looks like no Miami defense in the history of our school; even when Schnellenberger was getting it started!"
Sapp did not hold back, proceeding to reference Miami's 48-30 loss at Duke in Durham on Nov. 16.
"We got too much tradition down there to -- boy, Duke spotted us 10 points and beat us by 15 in a high school stadium. I'm sick!"
"That D-coordinator" is longtime Golden assistant Mark D'Onofrio, and after back-to-back seasons of finishing near the bottom of the ACC in total defense he has become a target of criticism for many Miami fans.
D'Onofrio and Golden were assistants together at Virginia in 2006. When Golden was offered the head coaching job at Temple, D'Onofrio left to become the Owls' defensive coordinator. He continued to hold that position through Golden's move to Miami, adding the title of assistant head coach along the way.
But Sapp's frustrations did not end with D'Onofrio. He also said that he had "a real issue" with Golden interviewing for the head coaching job at Penn State. In Sapp's eyes, if you are in Coral Gables at "The U" there should be no desire to relocate to Happy Valley.
