Washington State extends Mike Leach's contract through 2018
Washington State announced Monday that Mike Leach's contract has been extended through the 2018 season.
Washington State coach Mike Leach officially received a contract extension through the end of the 2018 season, athletic director Bill Moos announced on Monday.
"Mike Leach has done a fabulous job in his short time at Washington State," Moos said in an official release. "Extending his contract through the 2018 season will ensure a bright future for Cougar football. He has elevated the program on the field, in the community and in the classroom. I believe he is among the best college football coaches in America and is a fantastic fit in Pullman."
Leach is 8-14 as a head coach since taking over a struggling Cougars program before the 2012 season, but Monday's announcement is a bit more of a formality than reward. His five-year contract includes a rollover clause that needed to be agreed upon by both parties before Dec. 31 of Leach's second season.
The rollover clause adds one year to Leach's contract at the conclusion of every season, giving him a standing five-year deal with the school. In the official release, Leach was understandably pleased.
"I’d like to thank Bill Moos and President Floyd for extending my contract and giving me the opportunity to coach at Washington State," said Leach. "The support we have received from students, fans, alumni and the administration has been tremendous and by the end of this year we will have facilities that rival anyone in the country.
"As I’ve said many times, my family and I are extremely happy at Washington State and love living in Pullman."
Leach does have the Cougars in a position to reach the postseason for the first time since 2003. Washington State improved to 5-5 -- the program's most wins at this point in the season since 2006 -- with a home finale against Utah and the Apple Cup against Washington left on the schedule.
