The harsh transfer restrictions that Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy placed on former Cowboys quarterback Wes Lunt were finally lifted toward the end of the transfer process, Lunt revealed in an interview with an Illinois radio station on Monday.
When Lunt announced his intention to transfer out of Stillwater back in May, Gundy blocked him from 37 schools, including three that were among his top five choices. Lunt eventually chose Illinois but was forced to drop other potential suitors early on because they were on Gundy's restricted list. By the time Gundy finally reversed his decision, Lunt figured it was too much of a hassle to reconnect with some of the schools he had been communicating with earlier. And, so, the Illini got their quarterback.
So Gundy's late-hour change of heart didn't really matter much. Lunt, though happy to be closer to home at Illinois, expressed his frustration at the turn of events in the interview:
"It was difficult. I didn't understand the process, so when they were blocked, I knew I could appeal but it was going to take awhile," Lunt said. "It was frustrating. I understand the Big 12 . That's obvious. The others, it was a little frustrating, but that's part of it and I understand it. It's all good."
In the end, it worked out fine for Lunt, but the public relations hit Gundy took as a result of his bungling of the situation might take a while to dissipate.
