WR DaVaris Daniels reinstated for Notre Dame
Fighting Irish wideout DaVaris Daniels has been allowed to re-enroll at Notre Dame after missing the spring semester through academic suspension.
Notre Dame's leading returning receiver is back.
Rising junior wideout DaVaris Daniels has been readmitted to school after being placed on academic suspension for the spring semester, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. He will be able to take summer classes and rejoin the team for summer workouts.
Though the school has not made the reason for the suspension public, Daniels told CBSSports.com's Jeremy Fowler in February his grades had slipped below the required 2.0 GPA.
"Feels good to know I'll be back out there with my friends/brothers," Daniels texted to Fowler Wednesday.
A senior academically, Daniels still has two seasons of eligiblity remaining after a 2013 sophomore season that saw him finish second on the team in receptions (49), receiving yards (745) and receiving touchdowns (7) behind now-departed senior T.J. Jones. He caught 31 passes for 490 yards in 2012 and redshirted as a true freshman in 2011.
Also reinstated was the Irish men's basketball team's leading scorer, Jerian Grant.
Daniels told Fowler in February that he considered taking classes elsewhere during his spring suspension, but ultimately chose to focus on recovering from the series of fall injuries that limited both his on-field impact and off-field academic commitment.
“I let those guys down, and put pressure on them instead of myself,” Daniels said. “It's my fault. I didn't put in the time and effort necessary ... I'm going to carry that pain with me into next season.”
Brian Kelly said earlier this month he didn't expect any issues with Daniels' reinstatement.
“He’ll be, I believe, able to fully acclimate back with his summer work,” Kelly said, per Blue-Gold Illustrated. “Because we’ll have that individual face time with him this summer I have no question that we’ll be able to bring him back in without any problems.”
