Sources: Mississippi State has reached out to Murray State's Steve Prohm

Mississippi State's coaching search remains in the early stages. But multiple sources close to the school have told CBSSports.com over the past 24 hours that athletic director Scott Stricklin is focusing on Murray State's Steve Prohm.

According to sources, at least one person working on behalf of Mississippi State has already reached out to Prohm, whose Racers were eliminated from the NCAA tournament by Marquette on Saturday. The next step in the process remains unclear. But, multiple sources said, Prohm is Mississippi State's primary target for now.

Prohm would be interested in the Mississippi State opening for at least two obvious reasons -- prestige and millions of dollars. Combine those things with the fact that he grew up in Georgia and graduated from Alabama, and it's simple to see why the opportunity to coach in the SEC is intriguing. It should also be noted that Prohm has for years recruited the state of Mississippi -- first as an assistant under Billy Kennedy, then as the Racers' head coach. That's how Prohm discovered a little-known point guard from Biloxi named Isaiah Canaan who this season developed into a CBSSports.com First Team All-American while leading Murray State to a 31-2 record.

Mississippi State forced Rick Stansbury into "retirement" last week.

Stansbury was the head coach in Starkville for 14 seasons.
