Michigan State has suspended junior center Derrick Nix indefinitely after he was arrested Monday night and charged with marijuana possession and operating a vehicle with the presence of drugs.

According to the Lansing State Journal, Nix remained in jail as of noon on Tuesday.

Head coach Tom Izzo released a statement.

“Based on the information we have received, Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball team, and his future with our program is uncertain,” Izzo said. “He made an irresponsible decision that has put his future with our program in serious jeopardy.”

Nix, a 6-foot-9 Detroit native, averaged 8.1 points and 3.8 rebounds this past season. He was expected to play a much bigger role next year, with Draymond Green graduating from the frontcourt.
