Notebook: UCLA in pole position for Zach LaVine

LONG BEACH, Calif. – As Zach LaVine continues to grow and get better, he is rising up the rankings and boosting his stock.

Now at 6-foot-4, LaVine has great size and length for a point guard, and he knows how to get his own shot or find his teammates.

Several schools are after LaVine, including UCLA, Washington, Louisville, Memphis and Arizona, with Gonzaga, Oregon State, Washington State also in the mix.

One school is standing out, though: UCLA.

"I was just there on a visit," LaVine said over the weekend. "It was beautiful and I met the coaches. It's real nice."

While the Bruins are his favorite, Washington is right behind.

“I'll be ready for a commitment right around the beginning of August,” LaVine said. “I just have to decide what's best for me.”

Jarrell Martin standing out all spring

Jarrell Martin entered the spring ranked No. 26 at CBSSports.com. It turns out that was far too low for the 6-foot-8 forward from Madison Prep Academy (La.).

Martin was one of the best players at the Pangos All-American Camp, dominating the glass and playing aggressively at the offensive end. He knocked down outside shots and finished around the basket. In the end, Martin finished tops in scoring and second in rebounding.

“I think I played good. I wanted to be the best player in camp,” Martin said. “I started playing more physical, working on my outside shots.”

Martin named Louisville, Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State, UCLA, Marquette and West Virginia. He has taken trips to Louisville and Oklahoma State.
