Eastern Michigan coach Rob Murphy is leaving the MAC school to take a job in the NBA with the Orlando Magic, according to a report from MLive.com's Graham Couch.
A source told CBSSports.com that the job would be in the Magic's scouting department.
It's an abrupt move for Murphy, who spent one year at Eastern Michigan and led the Eagles to a 14-18 record. In fact, Murphy's been a college basketball guy almost entirely up to this point. Before coaching Eastern Michigan he spent seven years as an assistant on Jim Boeheim's staff at Syracuse. His career also includes a stint as an assistant at Kent State and six years as a high school coach in Detroit.
This development comes at an awful and unusual time for Eastern Michigan. It's rare for a program to need to hire a new head coach in June, let alone halfway through August. The college basketball season is now less than two months away. And classes start on campus at Eastern Michigan in three weeks.
