VIDEO: The U's No. 1 hopes die with buzzer-beating loss to Ga. Tech

By Matt Norlander | CBSSports.com

Miami's chances at a top seed were entirely extinguished Wednesday night with a bad home loss to 16-13 Georgia Tech.

Marcus Georges-Hunt was light and quick on his fight, tipping in his missed shot just before time expired to give Brian Gregory's Yellow Jackets a 71-69 win. Fairly shocking, untill you realize the loss means Miami now has dropped three games against teams well outside of the RPI top 100: the vexing-as-ever 63-51 road L to Florida Gulf Coast in November; the 80-65 stinkbomb at Wake on Feb. 23; and now this one.

No other team in contention for a No. 1 seed even has two losses as bad as Miami's three. The game wasn't broadcast nationally, but this result will resonate from coast to coast. We've reached the point in the season -- especially this season -- where all of these results are taken heavily into account. It's only human nature and, astonishingly, with not yet one top seed in lock for any program, bad Ls like this only make it easier to narrow the pool of candidates.

The outcome on Wednesday also stopped the Canes from winning the ACC outright. Miami dissolved an 11-point advantage in the second half. If you have concerns about the Canes, that's your right. After all, this team has zero tournament experience, despite being the oldest team in the country in terms of players of impact/minutes earned.

Miami (23-6, 14-3 in the ACC) has now dropped three of four games and finishes up the regular season vs. Clemson on Saturday. A win there means the school's first standalone ACC title (it's already guaranteed a share of the crown, also an ACC first in program history).
