Matt Doherty out at Southern Methodist

By Jeff Goodman | College Basketball Insider
Matt Doherty has been fired at SMU, sources told CBSSports.com.

The former North Carolina coach, who also spent a season at Notre Dame and Florida Atlantic, led the Mustangs to a 13-19 record this past season and a 4-12 mark in Conference USA. SMU got hammered by Marshall, 74-56, in the first round of the C-USA tourney.

Doherty spent three forgettable seasons as the head coach of his alma mater, North Carolina, from 2000 to 2003. Roy Williams replaced Doherty and won a national title in 2005. Doherty, 50, leaves SMU with a 80-109 overall mark.
