Villanova's Maalik Wayns enters name into NBA draft

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

The coaching carousel hit its stride earlier this week, and now it's time for the NBA Draft early-entry dominos to start falling over the next couple weeks.

On Wednesday, Villanova junior guard Maalik Wayns got things started by announcing that he would be entering his name into the NBA draft pool. Wayns did not hire an agent, though, meaning he can remove his name by April 10.

“I want to test the waters at this point to see where I stand,” Wayns said in a statement.

The 6-foot-2 guard was named second-team All-Big East this season after averaging 17.6 points and 4.6 assists. The Wildcats struggled this season, going 5-13 in conference play and finishing just 13-19 overall.

Villanova had no seniors in this season's rotation, and the Wildcats have two top-50 recruits lined up for next season in center Daniel Ochefu and point guard Ryan Arcidiacono. If Wayns decides to keep his name in the draft, Villanova does have pieces to replace him. Expect Tyrone Johnson to take on a much bigger role in the backcourt if Wayns leaves.

Wayns is currently projected as a second-round pick in the 2013 NBA draft by most services.
