Kentucky has added backcourt depth with one-year Wright State transfer Julius Mays.
Mays told CBSSports.com earlier on Sunday night that he committed to the Wildcats and expects to be able to play this coming season.
This is a significant pickup for John Calipari, whose Wildcats will be young and appear to be thin after losing six of their top seven players from the national championship team.
Another ex-N.C. State guard, Ryan Harrow, will start at the point and highly touted freshman Archie Goodwin will likely start at shooting guard -- although Mays will certainly get time as there isn't much beyond that in terms of true perimeter guys. Jon Hood, who was injured and missed all of this season, will also likely push for minutes in the backcourt.
The 6-foot-2 Mays averaged 14.1 points this past season in the Horizon league and said he also took a visit to Purdue.
Mays told CBSSports.com that he's a combo guard comfortable playing either backcourt spot, and several coaches contacted said Mays' strength is his scoring ability.
Mays began his career at N.C. State, where he averaged a little less than five points per game in each of his two seasons in Raleigh before transferring to Wright State. He sat out one season and then averaged 14.1 points last season while shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc.
"He can shoot," said one Horizon league coach. "He's more of a two-guard than a point guard. He's good off the ball screen, good with his handle at keeping guys off-balance in halfcourt. He doesn't like physicality, doesn't like to work without the ball. The question for him will be handling that level of athlete every night."
"He's talented offensively," another Horizon coach told CBSSports.com. "He can really score the ball and does a great job drawing fouls. He should be solid as a third or fourth option at Kentucky. He struggles to defend and isn't overly quick."
"He's a solid slasher," added another. "He's be first-team preseason in our league next year. I think he'll be a rotation guy for Kentucky. He's not a great athlete."
