Former Colorado head coach Ricardo Patton takes high school job in Memphis

Ricardo Patton was once offered the chance to replace Larry Finch as the head coach of the University of Memphis, but he passed. Fifteen years later -- on Tuesday, to be exact -- the former Colorado coach was announced as the new head coach at Central High School in Memphis. So that's kind of wild, huh?

"I'm excited," Central High principal Greg McCullough told The Commercial Appeal's John Varlas. "This is a major hire."

Patton made two NCAA tournaments in 11 years at Colorado and famously coached Chauncey Billups. The 53 year-old was Northern Illinois' head coach from 2007 to 2011. He was on Maryland-Eastern Shore's staff last season.

Memphis settled on Tic Price after Patton rejected the school's overture in 1997. Price resigned before the start of his third season after the athletic department was made aware of an inappropriate relationship with a student. He was replaced on an interim basis by Johnny Jones (now the head coach at LSU) and then permanently by John Calipari (now the head coach at Kentucky).
