Duke's Andre Dawkins will redshirt next season

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer
The possibility of Duke guard Andre Dawkins redshirting next season has been an issue since April, when various reports surfaced regarding Dawkins' status with the Blue Devils. Coach Mike Krzyzewski and the university have always maintained that he was still a member of the program.

At a press conference Thursday, Krzyzewski announced an official decision.

“We're redshirting him,” Krzyzewski said. “That's what we said and we're going to do that.”

Dawkins is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who averaged 8.4 points during his junior season at Duke. He has been up and down during his career with the Blue Devils, essentially disappearing at the end of last season; he didn't score a point in four of Duke's final six games, making just three shots during that stretch.

Part of the reason for Dawkins' struggles could be attributed to the tragic death of his sister Lacey, who was killed in a car accident in 2009. She was on her way to see Dawkins play against St. John's. Dawkins' father, Andre Sr., has said his son is having trouble dealing with the grieving process.

Krzyzewski wouldn't go too deep into the decision to redshirt Dawkins.

“I'd rather not talk too much about that,” he said. “It's a time for him to step away. It's the right thing we're doing. It's the right thing.”

Without Dawkins, Duke will turn to freshman Rasheed Sulaimon on the perimeter. He is a five-star recruit and should make an impact on both sides of the floor. Seth Curry returns to the starting lineup, and Quinn Cook and Tyler Thornton are also back.
