Boston University star forward transferring

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Because he's currently incapacitated and likely getting ready to send me more 22-second videos of Rotnei Clarke shooting in an empty gym, Jeff Goodman has asked me to send along some news here on the blog.

Goodman is reporting Boston University forward Jake O'Brien will transfer out of the school. O'Brien's a big name in the America East, as he was one of the stronger players in the league last season. The 6-8 forward averaged 11 points and 5.5 boards per game for the Terriers.

O'Brien's transfer comes because Boston University's transfer out of the America East after this season and into the Patriot League. That means BU will not be eligible to win an America East title this year, per America East rules. Ergo, reaching the NCAA tournament is a long shot, as BU would need to earn at at-large bid, which has never happened in America East history.

"Yea I had no intention to leave before they hit us with that," O'Brien told CBSSports.com via text message.

O'Brien was granted his release by the school Wednesday and is eligible right away at the school of his choice. Leaving a school with a "hardship" year, so to speak, means O'Brien should be able to go to another program with one year of eligibility left, primarily because he is a senior. (It's similar as to why Alex Oriakhi left UConn and will play at Missouri in 2012-13, even though UConn is banned from all of the postseason, whereas BU is not.)

O'Brien had a decent chance at America East Player of the Year. Now he's going to look for an open roster spot on a comparable team, if not one that's slightly better.
