NCAA denies Dez Wells waiver; Maryland plans to appeal

Dez Wells has been denied a waiver to play this season at Maryland and Terps coach Mark Turgeon told CBSSports.com that the school intends to file an appeal.

Wells was kicked out of Xavier after a sexual-assault allegation in which a grand jury declined to prosecute. He then chose the Terps and was hoping to receive a waiver from the NCAA so that he didn't have to sit out this season. However, sources told CBSSports.com all along that Wells receiving a waiver was unlikely.

The 6-foot-5 Wells, a sophomore, would be a huge addition to Turgeon's team for this season. Maryland added a group of talented freshmen -- Shaq Cleare, Jake Layman, Charles Mitchell and Seth Allen -- to go along with holdovers Nick Faust, Alex Len and Pe'Shon Howard.

With Wells, the Terps would have a chance to contend for one of the top spots in the league. He's a tough, hard-nosed wing who does a little bit of everything. Wells averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 boards as a freshman last season.
