Providence coach Ed Cooley was the first to admit he had a thin roster heading into the season. Ricky Ledo was not cleared to play this season. Kris Dunn is out until at least January with an injury. Transfers Carson Desrosiers and Tyler Harris have to sit out, and Iona import Sidiki Johnson won't be able to play until midseason.

Therefore, it didn't help when senior guard Vincent Council went down with a hamstring injury in the season opener.

On Wednesday, Bill Reynolds of the Providence Journal reported more bad news: Council will miss four to five weeks with the injury.

That leaves Cooley with just six scholarship players for the time being. Without Council, Bryce Cotton will have to continue his all-around productive ways, while freshman Josh Fortune has to become more of a ball handler. Moreover, expect the starting five to play extended minutes for the next month and a half. LaDontae Henton is used to that, but big men Kadeem Batts and Brice Kofane don't have much room for error.

Providence won its first two games against New Jersey Institute of Technology and Bryant, but Thursday's home game against Massachusetts should be tougher.

Council averaged 15.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.4 assists last season.
