Monmouth and Quinnipiac to join MAAC

Monmouth and Quinnipiac have accepted invitations to join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, a source within the league told CBSSports.com Friday.

The two schools are members of the Northeast Conference but would join the MAAC beginning for the 2013-14 season, expanding the MAAC to 11 teams. Loyola of Maryland is a current member but is moving to the Patriot League next season. The odd-numbered league doesn't mean the MAAC will settle on 11 teams. Conference presidents still have to decide if another school -- Wagner, also of the NEC, is/was considered a candidate -- will be invited soon, let alone accept the invitation.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Conference takes a hit by losing two member institutions, and if it can't replace them by next season, the league would be comprised of 10 schools.

Monmouth has four NCAA tournaments to its name; Quinnipiac has never reached the NCAAs.
